The Selkie
Selkies are mythical sea creatures, capable of shapeshifting. Primarily from Scottish folk legend, the story says that Selkies are sea folk, coerced out of the sea through trickery, made to live as humans on land. They spend their days longing for the sea. Once they discover their sea pelt, or their true origin, they immediately return to the sea to live out their lives in harmony with the water.
My favorite Selkie is from the Joanna Newsom song, Colleen. This beautiful, heart-wrenching, and magical tale tells Colleen’s story:
I dream some nights of a funny sea, as soft as a newly born baby. It cries for me so pitifully! And I dive for my child with a wildness in me, and am so sweetly there received.
The pendant features a large oval blue sea sediment jasper stone set in hand hammered copper wire. Swirls and curls embrace the stone in a design that is organic and asymmetrical. It is further accented by tiny copper beads. The necklace’s chain is comprised of handmade wrapped bead links of sea sediment jasper, blue frosted glass, and faceted clear glass crystal.
